A promising new treatment for depression

Depression remains the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting almost 300 million people, half of whom can’t find lasting relief from drugs or therapy. But a new experimental treatment using a fast-acting approach with targeted magnetic stimulation, called SAINT (Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy), has achieved significant success in trials. Correspondent Lee Cowan reports.

According to the WHO, depression is the leading cause of disability, with more than more than 300 million sufferers around the world. For the vast majority help comes in two main ways, medication or therapy. In Canada however, almost a million people live with treatment-resistant depression, so doctors are looking at different approaches that go straight to the source within the brain.
