A Korean scientist became the first in the world to successfully cure a patient’s Parkinson’s disease by using their own stem cells.
A Harvard Medical School research team, led by Professor Kim Kwang-soo…, used a process called dedifferentiation, which reverts cells to an earlier developmental stage, and implanted them into the brain.
The patient has recovered and is now strong enough to swim and ride a bike.
Highlighting the need for more clinical tests,… Professor Kim vowed to continue his work, in order to establish this treatment as a key cure for Parkinson’s disease.
Hey Guys. Mr. Wellness here. And today we’re gonna talk about the Cures Act. I know… the what?!?! We usually don’t get into government policy here but this is really important and it’s something you should know because it affects how you access your personal health information.
The Cures Act was originally signed into law in 2016 and it officially went into effect in November 2020. Basically, the Cures Act was designed to empower you with easy and unrestricted access to your personal health information by enabling you to get this information on apps and smart devices like your phone.
The biggest change that you may notice is you now have immediate access to information you did not have before – specifically your doctors’ clinical notes and test and study results. That’s right, your doctors’ notes, study and test results, your medical history, imaging results, procedure and progress notes… they’re all there for you. Isn’t that great?!
Maybe, but maybe not. Don’t forget, with great power comes great responsibility. What I’m saying is –don’t run to Google and start searching. Just don’t. I know you did it back when the internet was new but that pain in your big toe? It wasn’t Ebola.
So just like back then, you’re going to have to figure out how to appropriately understand and use the information now at your fingertips and how to discuss it with your doctor. And your doctor is going to have to figure out the best way to educate you and involve you more in care decisions.
Ultimately, the Cures Act is intended to empower you with information and encourage timely and effective conversation between you and your doctors. So remember… slow down, process the information you now have access to, talk with your doctors and together, you and your doctor can find the best way to move forward with your care.

The passage of the 21st Century Cures Act has drawn both applause and criticism. A sweeping bipartisan effort with multiple components, the law dramatically boosts funding for medical research, particularly in areas such as cancer and brain disease. The law also relaxes regulatory processes for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. In doing so, the law’s supporters point to the potential for faster treatments benefiting from a streamlined approval process. Critics raise concerns that safety and efficacy might be compromised, with potentially devastating consequences. And the law also has been questioned for failing to explicitly address high drug prices, a growing public issue. These debates are unfolding as the Trump administration is expected to imminently announce its choice for a new FDA commissioner, who will head an agency directly impacted by the Cures act. In this Forum, experts will explore the implications of the law for biomedicine, regulation, pharmaceuticals and patient advocacy.
This Forum event was presented jointly with STAT on February 27, 2017.

NOTE FROM TED: This talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, contains assertions about treating depression based on the speaker’s own theory. While some viewers might find the prescriptions to be helpful, please do not look to this talk for medical advice. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. Dr. Heitler discusses a treatment for situational depression (even when we don’t know it is situational!) WITHOUT psychopharmacology. Instead, she offers three prescriptions without pills, outlining these prescriptions using an example from her practice. She shows how investigating what makes us angry or upset can help us to re-empower ourselves, and our mental health.
Susan Heitler, Ph.D., a Harvard and NYU-educated clinical psychologist, writes a Psychology Today blog that has received over 7.5 million reads.
Dr. Heitler first earned recognition when her book From Conflict to Resolution brought understandings of collaborative conflict resolution from the world of legal and business mediation to the practice of psychotherapy.
Her Power of Two and Power of Two Workbook– published in six foreign language editions–plus her interactive marriage education website PowerOfTwoMarriage.com, teach the communication skills for marriage success.
Dr. Heitler’s most recent book and website combo, Prescriptions Without Pills, offers self-help versions of the techniques she uses in her clinical practice–techniques for relieving depression, anger, and anxiety plus strategies for sustaining well-being.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx Video Rating: / 5

Today, we’ll cure some duck and egg yolks and use them to create a beautiful wagyu pizza. This pizza is something that, quite truthfully, will blow your mind. Cured egg yolks are something special. Creamy, soft, umami packed. They’re hard to describe, and that’s why you should make them at home. Other than the time required to let them cure, this is a very straightforward process. The most difficult decision here is actually knowing what to pair them with when complete. Will it be a risotto? Pizza? Or perhaps totally new and different?
Cured Egg Yolks
4:5 Ratio of Sugar:Salt
12 egg yolks
1. Combine sugar and salt in blender and pulse until it reaches a fine powder.
2. Spread half the mixture on a baking sheet.
3. Make 12 indents with bottom of an egg, then separate out 12 egg yolks and add to your tray.
4. Cover each yolk with the remaining sugar and salt.
5. Cover tray with plastic wrap and rest in fridge for one week.
6. Remove from fridge and brush off each yolk, then rinse off salt in cool water.
7. Add yolks to wire rack on baking tray and place in 150 degree Fahrenheit oven. Let dry for two hours.
8. Shave over whatever you desire! It will grate just like parmesan cheese.
